I came to see, in my time at IBM,
that culture isn't just one aspect of the game
- it is the game."

Lou Gerstner, former IBM CEO

Are you wasting time and money abroad?

Even the global players do!

„622.000,- on top of what we’ve already invested?!?! How the heck could YOU let this happen??“

The words felt like a thunder storm coming down on Tom in its full magnitude. His superior standing in front of him with shock and furiousity written all over his face.

He couldn’t choke down the feeling of guild and irresponsibility, because he knew the company could’ve saved a lot of money and probably at least 4 month of work if he’d taken the proper decisions and actions to prepare their intercultural delegates to be on top of their game making things happen in China.

What they needed was profund preparation in intercultural communication and negotiation practicies to understand and assimilate the cultural challenges intelectually but also emotionally, socially and business wise.  That backed by the ongoing personal support through reflection, coaching and mediation by that great cross-cultural coach he heard of would likely have sealed the deal effortlessly.

He hated to admit to himself that ego plus an exaggerated opinion of the success they had at home made him feel like the investment of those 30.000,- would spoil his numbers. So he chose not to. And here he was, struggling to find plausible explanaitions to present to his management responsibles.

His job is on the line, right next to his reputation in the industry as well as the future of the whole corporate undertaking aiming to establish that profit critical production plant near Shenzhen, which was his prior responsibility.

Never in his entire career had he felt stronger about reversing one of his management decisions. Instead, he had to accept full responsibility for his poor choice and the firm had to pay that dearly.

Are you a gambler, too?

Don’t get me wrong here. Experienced as you are as Line or HR-Manager with budget responsibility I don’t need to tell you to choose your investments wisely.

Most of our clients pride themselves to have obtained great talent and therefore human potential in their workforce.

That’s at least until they experience the hard way that someone talented that excels in leading people in their home culture is no guarantee to work that magic abroad as well.

Alarmingly studies show that, Toms case is rather a rule than an exception. And so does our professional experience working with international operating companies and governmental institutions of all shapes and sizes around the globe.

It acts as illustration for what up to 42% of all global companies that send their stuff abroad experience during or after their international assignments. A sense of failure or disappointment.

Results have a way of biting you where it hurts when executive decisions are made solely based on short term goals instead of mid- and longterm impacts concerning all parties affected. Therefore, believe me when I say, I’ve seen worse than the example above!

Many of your own and your peoples‘ challenges working cross-culturally demand for tailormade and complex solutions that are aligned with your specific goals and requirements as an enterprise that juggles many diverse responsibilities like a pro.

We’ll help you anticipate and plan things accordingly. That’s a promise!

The ultimate cost of failed targets

„This has to be one of the most disappointing findings of our survey. Given the investments being made in bringing along a new generation of leaders and their growing need to be able to think and operate globally, for 42% to fail when they’re sent abroad is hard to fathom. It’s also worth noting that the failure rate is more or less a constant whether it’s Asian, European or North American managers.“

Bram Lowsky, Group Executive Vice President Americas at Right Management states concerned over the results of their last survey released.

painting a clear and concerning picture

To me those results are inacceptable! And I know there’re just as inacceptable to you, because I’ve walked in your shoes for the first 14 years of my career in management.

I get it.

I've been there.

I’ve made the though calls. Plenty of them in my 14 years in management.

The corporate world with its high expectations towards managers in terms of effort and hours put in and tight budgets when it comes to leaves us very little room for

Talking good business = talking price

I’m happy that you’re conscious about the price, since the price is one of our most interesting/intriguing advantages.

Would YOU agree with me that the value of a product or service is determined by its capacity to support YOU / what it can do for YOU in practice/ YOUR daily (was es für Sie in der Praxis tun kann), and not through the price you pay for it?

Great, then let’s see what our products and services can do for you! YOU see, I as a CEO and we as a company faced the choice to provide our products and services as cheap as possible and basically throw them on the market underpriced or to be mindful about our quality so it would truly and lastingly serve our customers. And that’s how we tried walking in YOUR shoes.

We were sure YOU’d prefer to work with a company that goes at any length and devotes every possible resource in creating superior products and services then with one that provides you with mediocre and unfitting solutions by using with cheap know-how and cheesy resources.

For most people – and surely for YOU as well – it’s crystal clear that good things are not cheap and cheap things usually aren’t good. And so we could only imagine that YOU’d only buy something that serves YOU well, long-term. Isn’t that right?
